NOTES: AT THE 2002 DESERT SUN MULTISPORT FESTIVAL, THE LEARNING
CURVE CONTINUED. WE WILL HAVE THE SHORT COURSE TRIATHLON BETTER
MARKED THIS YEAR BASED ON LAST YEAR'S EXPERIENCE AND WILL KNOW
THAT WE NEED TO BE READY TO HAVE RESULTS IN A MORE TIMELY MANNER.
I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE COST OF THE EVENT AND
CAN ONLY TO PARTICIPANTS THAT THE COST OF ENTRY IS DICTATED BY
THE COST OF PUTTING THE EVENT ON. EXAMPLES OF EXPENSES THAT CONTINUE
TO INCREASE ARE: COSTS OF PARK SERVICES, AMBULANCE SERVICES, TRAFFIC
CONTROL (UP OVER 400% IN 2002), STATE PATROL, FOOD COSTS FOR THE
POST RACE MEAL AND A MIRIAD OF OTHER COSTS. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN
MY ATTEMPT TO KEEP ENTRY COSTS AS REASONABLE AS POSSIBLE, SO THERE
WILL BE NO INCREASE IN ENTRY FEES FOR 2003. IN 2003 YOU WILL BE
ABLE TO "TEST YOUR IRON
.IN THE DESERT SUN HALF IRON"
TRIATHLON AND DUATHLON. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE DESERT
SUN ENVIRONMENT THE DESERT SUN HALF IRON, BUT NOT IN ITS ENTIRITY
THE DESERT SUN SHORT COURSE TRIATHLON IS FOR YOU
FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Highline Lake State Park is located 24 miles northwest of race headquarters, in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Desert Sun Half Iron Triathlon will consist of a 1.2 mile swim in Highline Lake, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. The Desert Sun Half Iron Duathlon is a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. The new Desert Sun Short Course Triathlon is projected to be a .5 mile swim, 16.5 mile bike, and a 4.2 mile run. The elevation of Highline Lake is 4700 feet above sea level. The elevation at the bike turn around is 6287 feet above sea level.

BIKE: The bike ride will begin and end at Highline Lake State Park. The bike leg will be 56 miles in length with an elevation gain of 1587 feet. The bike consists of rolling hills in desert terrain. There will be three water bottle hand off stations on the bike course at approximately 14, 28, 42 miles. Each athlete is encouraged to carry at least two water bottles as it is expected to be hot on the bike ride. The first 14 miles of the bike ride is in the desert with few distractions, the second 14 miles is through lush Pinon country and is scenic. The turn around point on the bike is at the base of Douglas Pass and the rider will return to Highline Lake State Park by the same route. The bike ride is primarily held on State Highway 139 which is a wide, well maintained highway. There are usually headwinds on the bike.
RUN: The run will be 13.1 miles on dirt trails, dirt roads and asphalt roads around and near Highline Lake. The run is on rolling desert terrain with some hills. There will be aid stations at each mile on the run. It is expected to be very hot on the run. There is a long, hot, barren section of the run that will test each athlete's mental conditioning as well as the level of physical conditioning.
BIKE: The bike ride will be the same as the Triathlon course. The Duathlon will begin with the bike segment. The start will be a time trial type start with each bike racer starting 15 to 20 seconds behind the rider in front. The start will be from a standing, unassisted start.
RUN: The run will be identical to the Triathlon course.
SWIM: The swim will be a .5 mile swim in Highline Lake. The start and finish of the short course swim will be the same as for the Desert Sun Half Iron. The DS Short Course swim will start after the DS Half Iron swim has passed the halfway point of the lake.

A turn around point will be established on State Highway 139 for the DS Short Course Triathlon. At the turn around point the athlete will return on the same route to Highline Lake State Park.
